Buried Car!

Posted by mike on January 28th, 2007

Ran across this story/website, and thought it was pretty cool…

On June 15, 1957, a new gold and white 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Sport Coupe was buried in a time capsule in downtown Tulsa, OK. The time capsule was part of Golden Jubilee Week: Tulsa’s celebration of Oklahoma’s semi-centennial. The car is buried under the sidewalk in front of the Tulsa County Courthouse, approximately 100 feet north of the intersection of Sixth Street and Denver Avenue.

The car was seen as a method of acquainting twenty-first century citizens with a suitable representation of 1957 civilization. According to event chairman Lewis Roberts Jr., the Plymouth was chosen because it was “an advanced product of American industrial ingenuity with the kind of lasting appeal that will still be in style 50 years from now.”

Buried CarApparently, the good citizens of Tulsa in 1957 thought we’d all be flying around in little space-cars or something and would not be familiar with gas, oil, and beer (among other things). And I guess, given the state of affairs at the time (Cold War, etc.), it was not a stretch that those things could potentially be gone by now.

Anyhow, they are going to dig it up at this June’s “Tulsarama”, and whomever was around in 1957 and guessed the closest to the correct population of Tulsa in 2007 will win the car. It might be mint, it might be a bucket of rust and skunked beer. The funny thing is, there are some restored ‘57 Plymouths out there that will probably be in as good or better shape than this one.

But still, it’s fun. Be sure to check out the video.
